I am getting a dslr soon. Any recommendations? I am wondering if it's worth it to go mid-end (think Canon 450D or Nikon D90) so fast. I was considering the Nikon D40 because it is CHEAP and LIGHT.
But I wonder if I should just get a better one first.
Little bird outside the birdcage-free but not free? I want to fly, but where to?

i think you should get d40. coz d90 quite expensive. U gotta get me d90 first then maybe 1 year after that u'll have enough money to get urself a d40
Haha, dream some more, faffy!! Long time no chat ya, how are you?
There's COMEX this coming May/June at Suntec. If you are not eager to get a camera you can wait until then. Not sure if it would be cheaper but they will surely throw in a lot of freebies.
I think D40 is quite old already. D80 is good but Nikon has stopped manufacturing it already. Get D90 la. Can record HD movie somemore. The first DSLR that can record video!!
But anyway I think Sony is not bad too. Haha. Quite happy with my current Alpha. It is one of the most affordable brands out there. Nikon and Canon are seriously overpriced. tsktsk.
hey how much was your alpha?
If you are going for d40, might as well get a d40x, but then, one will argue why not go up a little and get the d60.
You can try the hall's d60, personally, i don't like it, many things have to take the eye off the viewfinder, and look at the LCD display to change(they call this user-friendliness), whereas the old D70, D80, and D90 (and other pro series from nikon) all can be done without taking eye off viewfinder (a lot of key combi shortcuts that nikon users will be familiar with).
another caveat, although the d60 and d40 boast about 10MP, the picture is a little soft (not sharp around the edges of contrasting objects). Old D70 is much better here.
d60 and d90 is one generation newer, hence it has the new expeed image processing, which has much better and vivid looking color than the d40, d70, or d80. Image processing only applies to jpeg pictures, so you can always use RAW format to overcome that problem. But still....
Oh, and the video function in d90 is very handy, can even use it for fun shooting when the need arises...
Makes no sense to have 2 DSLR, so maybe you might want to think and buy one for a good long time.... careful there...
Ah thanks. I will keep it in mind while shopping :)
